The 2013 Nissin ABS Unit Recall
A number of motorcycle OEMs issued recalls for various models in their catalogs after a potentially defective Nissin ABS unit was discovered to have been installed. A total of 5,766 motorcycles were affected by the recall, with Triumph, who discovered the issue and reported it to Nissin, Suzuki, Honda, and Kawasaki issuing recalls.For Suzuki, the latest 2013 Hayabusa GSX1300R was among the recalls, as was the 2014 Honda CTX700, and Kawasaki's shiny new Ninja 300; Triumph's 2012 and 2013 Street Triple, Street Triple R, Daytona 675, and Daytona 675R were also affected.
The problem reportedly centers around a manufacturing error in one of the Nissin ABS components that could possible introduce contaminants into the braking fluid and interfere with the ABS function. Most of the motorcycle OEM recall notices describe the potential contaminants as aluminum chips caused by misalignment of a manufacturing jig; if a chip were to become lodged in either the inlet or outlet check valve, the ABS would lose functionality.
If you own one of these motorcycles, you should have been notified already by the dealer when you read this and had the ABS unit replaced for free. If not and you're unsure whether your motorcycle is affected, you can contact your dealer for more information. It's a good excuse to visit the dealer and look if he has some new accessories for your motorcycle.
